Perique is a special spice tobacco originating from St. James Parish, Louisiana, the only place where it is made. Compressed, heated, and fermented, the result is a strong peppery/fig flavor. It’s worthwhile noting that, due to its length, this particular cut of the condiment leaf can be difficult to blend and shouldn’t be used unless called for in specific recipes.
